DVT Awareness Month
March is DVT Awareness Month and here at Gammie HomeCare, we believe that leg health is extremely important. Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that can form deep in your veins. DVT is a commonly occurring medical condition and can potentially lead to a pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung). So, what are ways to prevent DVT? The first is to exercise regularly, anything to get you up and moving is the goal. Not only can regular exercise help prevent DVT, but it can help to manage your weight and stress levels. Try to avoid long periods of inactivity. If your work requires you to sit for long periods of time, take a few minutes to walk around to increase the circulation in your legs. The second is to quit smoking! Smoking increases your risk of cancer, and some forms of cancer increases substances in your blood that cause your blood to clot. The third and easiest change is to wear compression stockings. Compression stockings help prevent blood clots in the leg by applying pressure to the leg. Compression stockings can help the return of blood in the blood vessels and prevent blood from pooling in the legs. Along with helping to prevent DVT, compression stockings can prevent swelling in the legs and varicose veins.
